How do I use the RefWorks NHS institutional style?
RefWorks has a wide range of citation styles that you can use to create a bibliography and send search results to end users/colleagues.
Choosing a style
To choose the style you would like to use, just click Create Bibliography in the top menu:
You can then search for the style you would like to use and select the most appropriate for your needs:
You can read more about the RefWorks citation styles on the RefWorks help pages.
HEE Institutional Styles
In addition HEE have created two institutional styles, which you may wish to use. These produce a similar output format to HDAS so will look familiar to NHS Knowledge and Library staff. You can access them by following these steps:
1. Click Create Bibliography
2. Click Institutional styles
You will see that there are two institutional styles -
- KLS Evidence Search (LibKey.io)
- KLS Evidence Search (Standard)
The KLS Evidence Search (LibKey.io) style includes the libkey.io prefix within the DOI field to link users via LibKey to either the full-text of the article (if available) or to the standard article request form.
Please note that prior to using this KLS Evidence (LibKey.io) style you may need to run the bulk edit feature to tidy up you references and allow the LibKey links to work as follows (this only applies if the database provider includes the prefix http://dx.doi.org in the DOI field):
- Select the references that you wish to include in your bibliography then click on Tools>Bulk Edit
- The Bulk Edit page appears. Click on "replace"
3.
3. In the DOI field tell RefWorks to replace https://dx.doi.org with a space (just enter a space in the "replace with" box)
4. Click "replace data" and then "yes"
5. A message will pop up to tell you how many references were updated.
You can now create your bibliography with the LibKey.io institutional style using the references you have edited.
This will create you a bibliography that looks something like this:
The KLS Evidence Search (Standard) style does not include the LibKey.io prefix to access the full text, but you may use it if you prefer. Please note that you may still wish to use the steps above to tidy-up the DOI field.
The URL field in the NHS institutional styles
In addition to the DOI field which uses LibKey links (in the LibKey.io institutional style) most citation styles include a URL field which provides a link to either full text or further information. The information that appears here is determined by the data supplied by the provider database not RefWorks - you may note that there is some variation in the style of the URLs here.
The URLs that appear here can be lengthy. If you are happy that the LibKey link is working well here (using the steps above) you may wish to delete these extra URLs in your bibliography using the bulk edit feature. You can also remove these URL links when you export the references into RefWorks. Here is how to remove the URL field when you export from Ovid into RefWorks:
1. Select the references that you would like to export to RefWorks and click on "export"
2. Ensure that the "link to external resolver" and "URL" are deselected
3. Click on export and the references are imported into RefWorks without the additional URL fields. The links within the DOI field are maintained.
