Which title records do I need to maintain on SWIMS?
Loanable items
Please continue to maintain records on SWIMS for loanable items such as print books and DVDs. This is so that you can loan them, so that they are discoverable in the Hub, and for inter-library lending so that other libraries can discover which items are held where by searching the SWIMS OPAC.
E-books
If you subscribe locally to e-books please continue to maintain records for these on SWIMS so that they will be included in the Hub.
In the case of e-books supplied by EBSCO, it’s not essential to include these on SWIMS as they will automatically be included in the Hub. If they are included in both, then any duplicated records will be automatically deduplicated, provided that the meta-data matches.
Journals
Although print and electronic journals will be maintained in EBSCO’s Holdings Manager, it is still necessary to maintain print and electronic journal holdings on SWIMS for the purposes of inter-library lending. This is so that other libraries can discover which journals are held where by searching the SWIMS OPAC.
The future
In future it is hoped that library staff will no longer need to maintain print and electronic journal holdings on SWIMS, apart from in association with checking-in print journal issues where that is done. Work is ongoing to investigate options for creating a national database of journal holdings for use by inter-library loan staff which no longer requires the use of SWIMS.
