How do e-books display in the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub for SWIMS libraries?
E-books display in the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub either because they are:
- catalogued in SWIMS
- included in the Hub itself
1. E-books catalogued in SWIMS
All e-books catalogued on SWIMS can be retrieved in instances of the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub used by libraries using the SWIMS system for circulation.
All these e-books display 2 buttons, Availability and Request this item:
They display both buttons, regardless of whether your library has access or not.
By clicking 'Availability' the user is taken to the SWIMS OPAC (Iguana) in a new tab. From there the user clicks the relevant link and is taken to the full-text.
This means two steps, but it is necessary in case several libraries have access via different platforms.
The user can click 'Request this item' button to request the book if it is not available to them. Library staff then need to find a way to provide this book, perhaps via a print copy.
It is not possible to set up the Hub so that the 'Availability' button only displays against titles which the user is entitled to access.
E-book records which originate in the SWIMS catalogue display Database: SWIMS Library Catalogue
2. E-books included within the Knowledge and Library Hub
E-books in which aren't in SWIMS but are included in the Hub, e.g. those supplied by EBSCO, display a button to get immediate access:
This button takes the user to the full text of the e-book.
